The libretto takes us to medieval Scotland and tells of the love of Ginevra and Ariodante which the jealousy of Polinesso tries to disrupt. To give life to this summit of Hendelian Bel Canto, this new production brings together with Christophe Dumaux, laureate of the first edition of the Jardin des Voix , a cast of singers who are mostly collaborating with Les Arts Florissants for the first time — as is the case with stage director David McVicar.

As the opera begins, she is confiding her feelings to Dalinda when Polinesso, Duke of Albany, who covets the throne, bursts into her room and makes advances to her, which she forcefully rejects. Meanwhile, in the royal gardens, Ariodante and Ginevra, exchanging vows, are given the blessing of the King, who intends to make Ariodante his successor. Polinesso persuades Dalinda to dress up as Ginevra and admit him to her room that night: he promises to respect her honour and make her his wife. Left alone, Lurcanio reflects on his love for Dalinda. She in turn reflects on her love for Polinesso.

See also: Handel's lost Hamburg operas. The anonymous Italian libretto was based on a work by Antonio Salvi , which in turn was adapted from Canti 4, 5 and 6 of Ludovico Ariosto 's Orlando Furioso. Ariodante opened Handel's first season at Covent Garden and successfully competed against the rival Opera of the Nobility , supported by the Prince of Wales. Handel had the tacit and financial support of the King and Queen and, more vocally, of the Princess Royal. The opera received 11 performances during its premiere season at Covent Garden. Like Handel's other works in the opera seria genre, Ariodante , despite its initial success, fell into oblivion for nearly two hundred years.
