I read this for school, and it was one of the few mandatory books that I enjoyed! As a rule, I'm not really that into Mircea Eliade. For example Maitreyi wasn't really my cup of tea. I found it boring, confusing and not at all attention grabbing. This on the other hand had a certain mystery about it that left you thinking after you close the book. It's one of the tings that matter to me when reading a book, how much it gives me to think about.

One day, when he was on his way home from a piano lesson with one of his favorite students, Olivia, he realizes he forgot his music sheets at the girl's home, so he hurriedly descends from the bus and starts making his way back. It's a very hot day and Gavrilescu seeks some solace from the heat under the shadow of a walnut tree, but then he is drawn in into a brothel of gypsies. There, he is put through a series of challenges that will leave his mind leering and thoroughly confused, only to manage to get out of the brothel, and to realize that 8 years have passed ever since he took his first step into the brothel, and now everything he used to know is gone.

It is certainly an interesting read, and it has a lot of fantastic elements and a mystery vibe to it, without being to over the top and completely unbelievable. Recommended to Ramonel by: my sister-in-law; my teacher; my friends. Shelves: favorites , classics , want-some-more , beautiful-story. The symbolism in this work is astounding. Enchanting atmosphere, quirky interesting main character, strange things happening - a must read to everyone.

May 15, Asphodel Parker rated it liked it. I honestly have no idea what to say about this. It wasn't bad. It was intriguing. I liked the idea of breaking the flow of the time it also reminded me of the Lotus Hotel from the 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series. It's like, once you step into the said place, nothing will be working like before. Time may seem to be flowing normally, or even sto I honestly have no idea what to say about this.

Time may seem to be flowing normally, or even stop flowing, but, when you leave the place and come back to your normal life, you realize that a load of time has actually passed.

And this is not your normal life anymore. And I love the concept. It was pretty great. Shelves: junk. Excessive descriptions, muddled dialogues, weird fantasy about Death laced with the customary racism of the writer. A low quality example of fantastic literature. Oct 23, Mihaela Modorcea rated it it was amazing. Feb 25, a n d r e e a rated it liked it.

Not bad, it was pretty interesting at some points. A mixed bag. And somehow I've never particularly liked symbols. Most peculiar, I suppose. And I think the one I liked the most was" Un om mare" However, the one I liked the least"Podul" was full of words and notions that are far beyond my grasp. Eliade often writes about the history of religions as he was a professor in this field.

He writes especially about the Indian culture and religion, and while it worked in "Maitreyi" sometimes in A mixed bag. He writes especially about the Indian culture and religion, and while it worked in "Maitreyi" sometimes in this book, it seems far-fetched.

Overall, I liked it. Eliade proves that he deserves to be read and I'm convinced I'll be reading more books that have him as the authour, in the future. Nov 06, Puscas Mircea rated it liked it. The symbolism is a little confusing. Sometimes the storyline is boring. But as any story by Mircea Eliade , it was pretty good. It had an original concept. Aug 06, Matthew rated it it was amazing. Loved it!! Oct 29, sab's artbook rated it it was amazing. Fantastic fantasy read with callbacks to my favourite Greek myth ever.
