Identify and differentiate the foundations of ancient and medieval architectural production, considered the functional, formal, constructive and symbolic. Recognize the historical context as an essential basis for the study of architectural and urban units as wholes physical and cultural.

Acquire an interrogative structure that guides the student to study the history of architecture as a specific approach to understanding the architectural cultural identity, whatever the time and place. The symbolic signification inherent in Man. The historic dimensions of human appropriation of space and time: individual and society, territory and city, inhabitation and economic production.

The continental territories of the great rivers: the settlement of agricultural societies and the organisation of space. Mesopotamia: cities and monumental architecture. Ancient Egypt: territorial and political unity, urban units, stone architecture of temples and tombs.

The emergence of territorial insularity of the Aegean and the Mediterranean; space and time. Crete: the palatial architectonic matrix.

Greece: classic city and Hellenistic city, Greek sanctuary and temple. Rome: imperial urban matrix and civic architecture. Territorial fragmentation and the emergence of the local as a counterpoint to the universal in terms of Christendom. Ruralisation of the West — castles and monastic complexes. Urban renaissance — reduced city and urban expansion movements, episcopal city and new urban creations in the models of bastide and villes neuves, city limits, forms and architectures.

Religious monumental architectures: units of the High Middle Ages, Roman church and Gothic cathedral. Lectures of the contents of the program. Theoretical and practical preparation of monographic studies of analysis and interpretation of individual cases of architecture and city related to the content of the program.

Each study will be developed in groups students and will last the school year, with three time points two interim and one final. In these studies it promotes the ability to search and graphical literature, as well as discussion and oral and written expression and attitudes of questioning and learning.

In practical classes the work will be monitored on a schedule of attendance with fortnightly periodicity allowing the performance of tasks involving the coordination of groups at the practical class.

Assessment is continuous and integrates the theoretical component with two testes and the practical component with a group work. The negative rating in the practical component implies reprobation. The July resource consists of a test on the whole matter and is provided for students who obtain an average negative tests, provided they have obtained positive in the practical component of the course.
