Since idiomatic expressions are language-specific and culture-specific items in any language, translating them can be a demanding task which can be difficult for any translator, even professional ones. To solve their problems while translating such problematic items, translators apply different translation strategies. This point made the researcher interested to see which strategies were applied in translating idiomatic expressions and also to see which of them, was the most frequent one.

This study deals with translating strategies of idiomatic expressions in Daddy Long Legs novel Jeans Webster, and their equivalents in its Persian translation Baba Leng Deraz Soleimani, Bakers model which includes four translating strategies to translate idiomatic expressions 1. Using an idiom of similar meaning and form, 2.

Using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, 3. Translation by paraphrase, 4. Translation by omission was determined as the framework to evaluate strategies which have been used by Mohsen Soleimani in translation of Daddy Long Legs novel.

To do so, a total number of 90 idiomatic expressions were extracted from Daddy Long Legs and their Persian counterparts in Baba Leng Deraz. This study was carried out through a comparative study of idiomatic expressions from English into Persian. Based on data analysis, the researcher came to the conclusion that all of Bakers proposed strategies were used but their frequency of use was different and the mostly used strategy was translation through paraphrasing.

The findings of this research may help translators and students of English language in general, and students of translation training courses in particular, to be more familiar with translation strategies of idiomatic expressions. Bassenet, S.
