Who helped Bateman out? Who covered his murders and how? Why his lawyer in the end tells him "i had dinner with Paul Allen in London 10 days ago"? No one, not even Patrick correctly recognizes anyone. I believe the lawyer had lunch with just another Wall Street yuppie and was oblivious. Same as how he has no clue his own client, Patrick Bateman, is speaking to him.

In regards to the flat, I do believe that he murdered those girls and left them there. Paul Owen's family is probably extremely rich and powerful and hid away any evidence that their son butchered prostitutes in his apartment. The real estate agent obviously knows something is up by her demeanor, and she probably tells Pat to leave the apartment, so she can sale the apartment, as she has probably been paid off by Paul Owen's family. He's incredibly mocking and satirical, but ultimately he makes a serious statement. Did or is anyone else have trouble getting into this book? I'm about halfway through and it is just boring and repetitive; all of the details about who's wearing who, etcetera etcetera.

I kept wondering where the story would lead but no crescendo ever came. I guess all the brand descriptions and clothing critiques are social dig. Does anyone else get reminded of Sex In The City and their obsession with brand clothing? Lara I sort of saw the excessive mentioning of brands as a very specific technique. To me, this was one of Bateman's coping mechanisms, his persistent focus on material things because they're concrete and real, as opposed to the detachment he feels when he's really losing touch with reality. Brand names were also used to reinforce everyone's focus on material things, and everyone's warped sense of what is important.

What I loved about it especially was the fact that out of context, or even if it was placed in a different section of the book which wasn't the ending, it wouldn't have meant anything, but the fact that it was the ending meant everything.

OK, this is supposed to be a question, so I'll pose one: Does anyone think the author's point is worth the torture of reading this book? I've seen the movie and i'm currently reading the book. I've seen some similarities from both narratives, but i would like to know which of the characters weren't in the movie that i missed that were in the book?

Development[ edit ] Author Bret Easton Ellis initially imagined a disillusioned but nonviolent protagonist. After a dinner with friends who worked on Wall Street , he decided to make him a serial killer. His first draft of American Psycho left out all the grisly scenes, which were to be added in later. In , in conversation with journalist Jeff Baker, Ellis commented: [Bateman] was crazy the same way [I was].
