In LA filmmaker Rodney Ascher's ROOM , we hear from people who have developed far-reaching theories and believe they have decoded the hidden symbols and messages buried in the late director's film.
Carefully examining The Shining inside out, and forwards and backwards, ROOM is equal parts captivating, provocative and pure pleasure. Room is a American documentary film directed by Rodney Ascher about interpretations of Stanley Kubrick 's film The Shining which was adapted from the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The film has nine segments, each segment focusing on a different element within the film which "may reveal hidden clues and hint at a bigger thematic oeuvre. The title refers to a room in the haunted hotel featured in The Shining , which a character is warned never to enter. Though King's novel and Kubrick's film adaptation depart in some significant details, they share the same premise.
What is "Room " really about? Trouble is, the "Room " conspirators — er, contributors — don't seem to realize that those meanings are either not hidden, not meanings or not remotely supported by the secret evidence they think they've uncovered. For a while, at least. Five off-screen narrators pitch various interpretations of " The Shining ," accompanied by stock footage, illustrative recreations and clips from Kubrick's filmography.
